My Life With Summer

There is no better or worse companion than the one they call Summer. I, myself, have had several encounters with her and I must admit that she continues to confuse me. Everybody always looks forward to seeing her as she brings warmth and lights up the air around her.

But I know better. She is a two-faced trickster. And one that angers easily…

A few days ago, I was sitting comfortably in my chair outside, enjoying the sunshine and the calls of the loons from the lake. The campground itself was serene; a place of relaxation and calm. I reclined in my chair and basked in the warmth of her embrace while she whispered those sweet nothings in my ear. Then, with the sun continuing to shine down on me, she let loose and threw water at me without any warning. I was left speechless. To make matters worse, as quickly as she started, she stopped, moved on, and acted as if nothing had even happened! I couldn’t believe it! Not only did she leave me soaking wet but I started to feel burned as well! And this isn’t the first time she’s done things like this.

Yesterday I was hoping she’d join us all for a round of golf. Well let me tell you, she had it out for me then too! Minutes before we were supposed to tee off, she threw one hell of a temper tantrum! I don’t know what her problem was but her timing was terrible; all that crashing, grumbling, and banging. She should be ashamed of herself. Embarrassed! We were forced to cancel at the last minute because she wouldn’t quit huffing and puffing all over the place. So, after we canceled we decided we’d go to the pub and grab a beer instead and suddenly she was all cheerful again; sunshine and rainbows. She’s just like a child! I wish I could tell her to act her age but I know she won’t listen. I just can’t seem to figure her out.

Now, as I sit here typing this, I find myself longing for that warm embrace from a few days ago. After everything she’s put me through, I’m not really sure why. I don’t know what I did, but she is definitely giving me the cold shoulder today. Her gaze is enough to make me shiver. I just can’t win; she’s hot one day and cold the next.

Summer will be going away soon though. Her days are spent and she’s beginning to tire. Eventually, she will sleep as we all must. I will miss her dearly but the more time I spend with her, the more I look forward to spending time with lady Autumn.
